Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Leominster Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Leominster typically runs $340-$580 for standard single-flue models and $520-$890 for multi-flue or custom-fit jobs, with most completed in one visit. We stock Gelco-compatible caps in common sizes for Leominster’s prevalent 8×12 and 8×13 clay flue tiles, and we can match less common Gelco Series A and Series L profiles through our Haven buying network. Most homeowners realize their cap has failed when water spots appear on the firebox ceiling after a driving rain, or when a neighbor spots galvanized pieces in the yard after a March windstorm off the Wachusett ridge.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break down into three series that matter for Leominster homes. The Series A uses a bolt-on base ring designed for standard clay flue tiles with outside dimensions of 8×8 up through 13×13. The Series L adds a deeper overhang and a locking band for square and rectangular flues that have shifted or spalled at the top course. The Series C covers multi-flue chimneys with a single hood, common on the 1980s colonials off Route 12 where two fireplaces share a chimney breast.

To identify yours, look for the stamped model number on the underside of the hood, or measure the outside width and depth of your flue tile at the top course. The Series A and L bolt patterns differ by half an inch, a mismatch that sends homeowners back to the supplier more often than it should. We carry both patterns on the truck. Gelco’s OEM stainless is 304-grade; we also source 316-grade marine stainless through our Haven network for homes within two miles of Monoosnoc Brook where the moisture load is higher. Level Two Chimney Leominster is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing
  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco’s galvanized models begin red-oxidizing at the seam welds after eight to twelve years in Leominster’s freeze-thaw cycle. Once the base ring corrodes through, the cap loosens and tilts, channeling water directly into the flue instead of shedding it.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. A cap with a bent or missing screen, or a hood that has shifted in wind, lets rain enter the flue. In Leominster’s older homes near Monument Square, we’ve found dampers frozen solid from seasons of slow dripping that the owner mistook for humidity.
  • Debris or animal nesting material on the smoke shelf. The mesh screen on Gelco caps is 5/8-inch weave, which blocks squirrels and most birds but can fatigue at the weld points. When the screen separates from the frame, the flue becomes an open invitation.
  • The cap is visibly tilted or missing after weather. Gelco’s three-point attachment depends on tension bolts gripping the flue tile. Spalling, common on Leominster chimneys with parged crowns that have cracked, reduces grip and lets the cap lift in gusts above 45 mph.
  • Soot or creosote buildup on the cap hood itself. This signals backdraft or poor draw, often because the cap’s clearance height above the flue is now wrong, the mesh is clogged with creosote flakes, or the hood has dented inward from impact.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check whether your cap is loose by sighting up from the firebox with a flashlight, or by binoculars from the ground. Do not climb the roof to torque bolts or remove a seized cap. The work happens at height, on a surface that may be steeper than it looks from the yard, and often involves corroded fasteners that require impact extraction. A cap that releases suddenly can slide down the roofline with you in pursuit.

We also find that DIY installs often miss the crown condition beneath the base ring. A cap seated on a cracked or sloped crown will fail again in two seasons. The camera goes up first. Everything else follows the footage. Call (978) 481-2900 and we’ll give you a written price before anyone sets a ladder.
